On April 28th Come to Rotary after Work and grow your awareness of Human Trafficking. Join us for a Spaghetti dinner at 6:00 PM in the Melissa ISD admin building at 1904 Cooper Street. We will be hearing from Rebecca Jowers of the Poiema Foundation.

After watching a documentary about innocent children sold into sexual slavery internationally, Rebecca Jowers was ready to move her entire world to help them. Two years of research on the subject of human trafficking revealed a rampant problem here in the United States. In our cities and neighborhoods, human trafficking has no borders, no matter the economics. Rebecca didn’t have to move her entire world; the need was right down the street. With the vision of raising public awareness, reaching, and educating the vulnerable, and ultimately opening a safe house, Rebecca created the Poiema Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Great time to bring a friend, Spouse or co-worker.

Announcements
On May 5th we will be hearing from Wen Chen. Wen has been working for Caltech since 2000 as a biologist and information scientist on genomics and biological research. Her everyday work includes scientific outreach by speaking at conferences and seminars in universities like UC San Diego and Harvard Medical School. In her personal life, she is an active member of Amnesty International, focusing on human rights in China. She is also a board member for Caltech Women in Biology and Biological Engineering. She lives in Pasadena with her husband and two teenage daughters.
Wen will be speaking to us about Chinese Medicine and Meditation. Chinese medicine has a deep root in Taoism theories regarding the human body as a miniature universe. Ancient Chinese believed that the prevention of getting ill is more critical than any cure. A healthy lifestyle includes eating the right food. Food is also the primary source of medicine when one is sick. There is a very long history of meditation in China to keep people calm and give them wisdom. Audiences will hear legends about ancient Chinese doctors. We will discuss how these wise people integrated traditional values into their practice to cure individuals and positively impact society.
Last week's actions
Last week we had a business meeting. We heard from Dana Conklin our Flag Chair about this year’s Flag program and the support needs.  We also reviewed the club budget and the foundation budget. We voted to purchase Club Volunteer t-shirts to give out to any volunteer who comes out to help with a project.

Our Member of the Month is John Cave.
John joined Rotary back in 2018 based upon a ad in the local newspaper. He found friendship and the opportunity to serve the community. John is married to Debbie, and they have two sons in the local area. They choice Melissa as it is close to both families and close to volunteer opportunities.  John volunteers with his wife at Meals on Wheels, helping in the kitchen on Tuesdays and Thursdays. John also works as a volunteer Tax aid for AARP during Tax season. Most recently John joined the Chamber of Commerce and serves on the Chamber Board.
